SK8ART was a huge success and I think it shows the amazing amount of tallent that we have right here in the Wausau area. Congrats to all who participated! Gallery402 is excited to announce our upcoming exhibit SK8ART, an exhibit of local skate board art and graphics. With over 200 area youth participating, we are exploring skateboard art within our mainstream culture and to acknowledge the creativity that has been emerging from the streets in our own community. Even the biggest skate track opponent would be pressed to prove that skateboarding isn't a creative sport. The creativity is also found on skateboards themselves, where the boards prove that the art of skateboarding reaches beyond the tricks of the trade. Skateboard art demonstrates that some of the most innovative graphics are being generated by youth emerged in this subculture. Local skate artists have joined their passions of art and skateboarding to showcase not only the art of the sport, but the art of the deck itself.

APRIL 11TH OPENING - STREET ART

Street Art is art developed in public spaces — that is, "in the streets" — though the term usually refers to art of an illicit nature, as opposed to government sponsored initiatives. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, stencil graffiti, sticker art, wheatpasting and street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing and street installations. Typically, the term Street Art is used to distinguish contemporary public-space artwork from territorial graffiti, vandalism, and corporate art.
The motivations and objectives that drive street artists are as varied asthe artists themselves. There is a strong current of activism and subversion in urban art. Street art can be a powerful platform for reaching the public, and frequent themes include adbusting, subvertising and other culture jamming, the abolishment of private property and reclaiming the streets. Other street artists simply see urban space as an untapped format for personal artwork, while others may appreciate the challenges and risks that are associated with installing illicit artwork in public places. However the universal theme in most, if not all street art, is that adapting visual artwork into a format which utilizes public space, allows artists who may otherwise feel disenfranchised, to reach a much broader audience than traditional artwork and galleries normally allow. Whereas traditional graffiti artists have primarily used free-hand aerosol paints to produce their works, "street art" encompasses many other media and techniques such as wheatpasting, stickers, stencil graffiti, mosaic tiling, video projection and street installations. For these reasons street art is sometimes considered "post-graffiti" and sometimes even "neo-graffiti". Street art can be found around the world and street artists often travel to other countries foreign to them so they can spread their designs. It is also not uncommon for street artists to achieve commercial success (Shepard Fairey, Faile, Kaws) doing graphics for other companies or starting their own merchandising lines.

Joel is educated at the Master's level. In addition to teaching at Wausau East, he has taught Adult Art Workshops at Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum. Joel has had his own work shown at juried exhibits throughout Wisconsin and had a solo exhibit of his work at UWMC in 2005.

Coop's 'Good Year' in Swindle Magazine!!!

The infamous Rubber Track.... Coop's 'Good Year' is one of Gallery 402's favorite pieces. We have had it in the window of the store in the past and most recently hung it for our Valentine show. Now you can see this amazing painting in Swindle, a nationally published art mag. Swindle (www.swindlemagazine.com) Issue 15 has an amazing article on Chris Cooper "COOP" and they use an image of this painting to show his work. Pick up a copy of this at your local bookstore (Barnes and Noble carries it in Wausau). It's almost as good as seeing it in person... not quite, but almost. In case you forgot what it looks like in person, hurry up and stop into the gallery to get one last glance!

You Must Be This Tall To Ride

Thanks to everyone who made it out to see our special valentines exhibit "You Must Be This Tall To RIde". There was a great turnout at the private event as well as during the 72 hour opening. People left with smiles (or smirks) and enjoyed the racier subject matter. Also, thanks to our neighboring businesses for donating beautiful and tasty food and beverages. Another big thanks to BVO, our jazz DJ, who made the trip up from Milwaukee.
We are currently hanging a Street Art show with an upcoming opening on April 10th. This show will be in conjunction with the CVA's Body Art Show (opening the same evening). The show will consist of graffiti artists, street artists, and the back room is continuing to showcase 4 original paintings from the legendary Robert Williams, creator of Zapp Comics and Juxtapoz magazine. The show is going to be fantastic and we have some exciting surprises for the opening night. Stay tuned and stop in!

Gary Baseman Visit

Doze Green

Doze Green was born and raised in the upper west side of Manhattan, New York City and was one of the pioneers of the Hip-Hop culture. He first started writing graffiti in his neighborhood in 1974, and started painting subway trains in 1976.

The following year he joined the Rock Steady Crew. The Rock Steady Crew were pioneers of a new style of dance known as breakdancing or B-Boying. The crew first started dancing at art exhibitions and galleries of Soho and the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

During this time Doze was also attending the High School of Art and Design, where some of the most talented and well respected graffiti artists came from. Artists such as Lady Pink, Daze, Ernie Valdez, Seen TC5, Mr. Wiggles, Mare 139, and numerous others. In 1982 Doze showed his artwork in a well known group show at the Fun Gallery. At this same time after appearances in major movies such as Flashdance, Style Wars, and Wildstyle, the Rock Steady Crew was launched into action and the limelight.

From B-boy to graf legend Doze has gone to tagging the hallways of South Bronx projects to designing for clothing lines like Kikwear and Ecko. In the process, he's become a proponent of the avant-garde "fusionistic" art movement.

In the past year, he's been featured on dozens of exhibitions in art galleries from both coasts.

Best known for his characters, Doze has begun to concentrate on canvases that blend wildstyle techniques with metaphysical concepts. "I think I'm at the point where I'm movin' even further, to more distant frontiers like sculpture and 3-D painting".

With pieces ranging from the low thousands to upwards of $12,000, it's obvious that Doze is aiming for the serious modern art collector.

"Probably the biggest challenge and the most fun is painting live," reveals Doze. "There's a communion between the audience, the DJ and myself. The DJ is feeding off the music, and if the crowd is hype, he goes that extra mile. The same applies to me."

Opening Night October 5th

This was a great opening of our 2nd show at Gallery 402. Thanks to all that made it and a special thanks to visiting artist Dan Bouthot, from Deer Isle Maine. Dan put on a great screen printing workshop with custom prints just for the opening event. The show consisted of a great lineup of artists. More information and images on the work is to come!
